Excerpt
My heart went cold and stopped beating. I could not fathom why she would ask such a thing, but I saw the look of mortal fear in my wife’s eyes and knew she was serious.
“We are being selfish by making him go through all this pain; we’re keeping him alive just for us.”
Maybe we should just let him die?
I stood there with trembling legs facing my wife and son. I didn’t think I had the strength to rise above such intense misery. For the second time since Chance’s stay in the hospital began, I knew fate required me to dig deep within to rescue my wife from utter hopelessness.
We do not let kids die…We do not let kids die…
From Second Chance—Chapter Eleven: The Unspeakable Question
FAQ
Why did you decide to write the book? Three reasons:- I carried a great amount of guilt with me after the ordeal—I hoped that writing the book would help me put some of it behind me.
- We felt lucky that Chance survived and felt we needed to give back by sharing our story and hopefully assisting other parents.
- To help with issues of food safety awareness.
How is Chance's health today?
We have some clinical evidence that Chance will always have damage to his kidneys; we just do not know to what degree. His immune system is not as strong as we would like, but we hope that will improve as he gets older. Other than that he is healthy, active, and happy.
What went through your mind when you first took Chance to the hospital?
My first thought was, “My god, this is my fault!” I had convinced myself that my son was going to die because of a bad meal I had given him. The guilt was intense.
What advice would you give other couples with critically ill children?
Remember my acronym, HAL.
- H = Hope. Keep hope alive. Think positively and know that miracles do happen.
- A = Advocate (or Action). Be an advocate for your child while in the hospital. Trust your instincts; if something seems wrong, it probably is. Take action. Seek out help immediately.
- L = Learn. Learn as much as possible about what your child is facing. Knowledge is power.
Chance survived. Is he an unusual case? Have you talked to any parents who have been through similar ordeals?
Yes, we feel very fortunate that Chance survived. So many other children have lost their fight with E. coli. I've spoken to parents who were less fortunate than we were and shared in their pain. It's devastating to these families losing a child in such senseless way.
How do you want this book to impact your readers?
Our hope is to give back by providing awareness to the issue of food-borne illnesses in our country. The goal is to educate parent that this is a real threat and teach them about ways in which they can protect their children from the same ordeal we went through. We also hope to work in partnership with the leaders of our country to bring about reform in our country’s food safety laws.
Reviews
"Threats on your child's life are the most taxing thing that could happen to a parent. Second Chance: The Story of a Father's Faith, a Mother's Strength, and a Child's Will to Live is a memoir of the Moore family as they faced the near death experience of their youngest. Warning families about food safety, being aware of potential threats, and how to cope with the unimaginable horor of the uncertainty of life, Second Chance is a must read for any parent who worries about their children and their diet."

Midwest Book Review
"Second Chance" is an important story. It is one that will especially help other parents with children suffering thought serious food borne illnesses. It is a story that reminds us that "chance" is an important part of life, but so, too, is how we handle it.
Dan Flynn

"This is a book that parents should read, especially as problems with E.coli and other forms of contamination are running rampant today. Chance's parents were not educated on the symptoms of E.coli infection and the outcome could have been quite different. The book also teaches parents how to find faith and to believe in miracles, while also fighting for the rights of their children. No one knows a child better than his parents, and parents need to be their child's biggest advocate." (excerpt)
