Father's Day Surprise

My kids move me emotionally in different ways. My pride for my oldest, Shannon, is hard for me to describe, though. Maybe it’s because she is talented in so many things that I am not: dance, music, acting—all self-taught, too. She is amazing.

Shannon showed up for Father’s Day this year with a guitar in hand. She said she had written a song about Chance when he was ill and wanted to sing it for me as my gift. I was shocked.

I didn’t even know she knew how to play the guitar.

Shannon responded shyly that she had been teaching herself how to play the guitar over the Internet the last few months and wanted to write a song about Chance.

I didn’t even know she knew how to write song lyrics.

“It really wasn’t that hard, Dad,” was her response. That’s my daughter.

Shannon and Loryn

Then she sang the song to all of us. This was truly a special treat because she usually is too shy to sing in front of the whole family. Marti and I and the rest of the kids were dumbfounded at how beautiful the song’s lyrics were. I was so impressed I jumped up immediately and called my parents to have her sing it to them over the phone. Amazing.

A couple of days later I asked Shannon to record the song for the website. Shannon suggested that her sister Loryn help her sing. So the girls practiced for a couple of days before going into the studio.

I sat behind the glass of the recording studio watching and listening to my two beautiful girls sing their hearts out in a song written about their brother. What dad wouldn't be busting with pride? It is a moment I will always cherish.
