The Meaning of the Rocket

Thumbnail image for rocket_design6.pngThe other day Chance announced at his preschool graduation ceremony that he wanted to be an astronaut when he grows up. That surprised Marti and me, and we think it might have been fate. At the time, we were debating whether or not to make a soaring rocket ship the banner logo on this website.

As I mention in the book, Chance likes to put on imaginary rockets and race me everywhere he goes. The boy loves speed! So the soaring rocket represents Chance’s boyish and exuberant spirit. Since taking on this book and website project, it has also become a symbol to me of flying boldly into the unknown.

I love to take on challenges and accomplish my goals in new and unique ways. This project has been a joy to me so far, and I feel sometimes like I have blasted off to the stars.

Please join our family on our rocket ship ride! —Kip

Colorado E. coli Alert

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment issued a statement on June 18 urging Coloradans not to eat raw Nestle Toll House cookie dough due to possible E. coli 0157:H7 contamination. The CDPHE is advising consumers to not use this product for the time being.

This alert was brought to my attention by S.T.O.P. This organization was invaluable to Marti and me during Chance’s illness by providing us with information and support.

Stay safe!  —Kip

I would like to extend my deepest condolences and sympathy to the family of Joseph Coning of Tennessee. Joseph passed on Monday after losing his battle with E. coli and hemolytic uremic syndrome. I wept for the Coning’s when I read this; their story reminded me why I am so passionate about wanting to tell Chance’s story through my book and speaking engagements. This truly is why I want to spread the word about issues of food safety.

Read more about Joseph’s story in The Daily Times.

I am pleased to announce the launch of SecondChanceStory.com, the companion website to my book, Second Chance: Parents Dare to Hope. I invite everyone visiting to stay and post comments on my blog, read news and information about the book, learn how to schedule a speaking engagement, and enjoy photos of Chance and the rest of the family.

Thanks!  Come back often.  —Kip
